GIA (1998) *** Angelina Jolie, Mercedes Ruehl, Faye
Dunaway, Ellizabeth Mitchell. Jolie gives a
remarkable turn as iconoclastic fashion model Gia
Carangi during the late 1970s whose brash, often
selfish, behavior often overshadowed her natural
beauty which made her famous (and notorious) until
her tragic demise in succor in drugs and succombing
to AIDS. Written by Jay McInerney and directed by
Michael Cristofer the film has a semi-documentary
biopic quality that only occasionally drifts into
maudlin iconography.
